40 mpg compact sedan comparison

Yahoo Autos/Motor Trend -- It's a powerful number -- 40 mpg. Car engineers do sophisticated analysis to figure out how to reach it, and the numerical game often comes down to just getting to the threshold where the number rounds up to 40.

It just so happens that we're practiced at rounding up, too -- in this instance, rounding up six significant examples of this rarified 40-mpg breed to determine if any of them are also cars you'd be happy to own.
The select six we've summoned to our investigation are the Chevrolet Cruze Eco (28/42), Ford Focus SFE (28/40), Honda Civic HF (29/41), Hyundai Elantra (29/40), Mazda3 (28/40), and Volkswagen Jetta TDI (30/42). A diesel, but no hybrids?

As hard as you try, you still can't get 30mpg out of a full size pick up.

Mileage-wise, we are still decades behind europe in mileage... thanks to the GOP freezing CAFE back in the 80s...

Have driven, and really like the Mazda 3 and the Focus - agile, fun to drive cars that happen to get great mileage.

Let's see how many individuals out there will shun small autos when the next economic boom raises the price of gas to $5 or $7/gal.America is on the cusp of a paradigm shift regarding it's energy future, our decisions NOW will determine OUR amount of pain in the future.

Why not make it a large car or an SUV, mplato? Give the engineers some credit. This is a bigger mileage improvement than we've seen in the three previous decades. By 2025, cars will need to average 57mpg. Engine technology will get there but it takes time.

While I want to agree with carpenter4u, you must realize that people have very little real choice in what they want in a car. The automakers have spent millions of dollars in marketing and commercials to get you to buy bigger cars with larger engines than any of us really needs.

Of course, cars aren't about needs but about want and desire. Cars make us look stronger or smarter or sexier. And we'll pay lots of money to feel that way.

I think carman11 just invented a real-life perpetual motion machine. The only drawback is that you can only drive it downhill.

I think we all can agree that it takes more fuel to drive uphill than it does to travel on level ground.

That's 40 mpg on paper, not on real roads or in traffic.

If it weren't for those regulations and government agencies, you wouldn't see any cars with 40mpg, rf6480. The only reason new cars are getting much better mileage than cars from only a few years ago is that the government finally raised the mileage requirements of new cars from the low to mid 20mpgs, where it had been sitting since the early 1980s.

abcdMA, ask yourself this question. How many people does my car carry every day? Are you hauling a kids football team every day? Do you need a large trunk to haul bags of mulch from home depot every day?

The best way to save money and still have a practical car is to buy one that meets 80% of your needs. If you buy one that will handle 100% of your needs, it will cost you far more in the long run. Better to shoot for 80% and then rent a car, truck, or van for that other 20% that you only need once or twice a year.

I keep remembering the Sprint that was doing better than 40mpg in the mid 80s. 30 [plus years later and we can only find six? I'd say the oil industry has had their hands in this process!

I'd love to get 28mpg on regular! My 2002 sport coupe only gets about 20mpg on average and requires premium. Can't wait to get something more economical.
