Fracking Is Safe—Except in Wyoming

businessweek.com -- Louis Meeks, a hay farmer in Pavillion, Wyo., holds a mason jar under a faucet in his house and turns on the water. It’s a demonstration he’s given to a slew of neighbors and government officials. The water, drawn from his backyard well, is cloudy and smells like diesel. “Would you want to drink it?” he asks.

After sampling and analyzing his water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last December issued a preliminary report citing the Pavillion area as the one—and only—place in the nation where fracking is causing water contamination.

Far from thanking Meeks for raising the alarm, his neighbors in the town (population: 231) now say he’s responsible for driving real estate buyers and business away. “It was instantaneous, like the spigot was turned off,” says Ginny Warren, descr

Speaking of whiny posters! Ohio shouldn't drink their water!

"does everyone have to be able to smell, burn,or drop dead from polluted water before governor Kasich stops the dumping of pennsylvania's fracking water in ohio.you'll notice i capitalized Kasich, but not ohio, because he thinks he is more important than the people being poisoned."

But not to worry...they are called 'damn Yankees' anyhow! Some say, the fewer the better.

Sure fracking is safe, except for the ground and drinking water contamination with many toxic chemicals, except for the instability to the underlining ground that in certain areas have caused earthquakes. Hey, besides that, it's perfectly safe.

Guess it would just make to much common sense for Meeks' neighbors to all band together to blame the drilling company that caused their problem. Is it that much easier to sweep the problem under their collective carpets and just sell their defective properties to some unsuspecting and naive stiffs? Quite a shame if this is now the 'American Way'!

There seems to be distinct sides to fracking.

I found this on the EPA website:

"Following recent discussions, Wyoming Governor Matthew H. Mead, the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone Tribes, and U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson issued the following statement about groundwater issues in the area east of Pavillion, Wyoming:

We believe that collaboration and use of the best available science are critical in meeting the needs of Pavillion area residents and resolving longstanding issues surrounding the safety of drinking water and groundwater.

The State of Wyoming is committed to providing the citizens with a long-term source of safe drinking water and the EPA commends the State for its commitment. The Agency will work with the State, the Tribes and the rural community east of Pavillion to find the long-term and affordable drinking water solution.

In order to ensure that the results of this next phase of testing are available for the peer review process, to which the Agency has committed, the EPA has agreed to delay convening the peer review panel on the draft Pavillion report until a report containing the USGS data is publicly available. The State of Wyoming and the Tribes appreciate this decision. In the meantime, EPA’s draft report will continue to be open to public comment.

Together with the Tribes, the EPA and the State will convene a group of stakeholders and experts to develop and carry out a plan for further investigation of the Pavillion gas field to identify potential risks to drinking water, including possible sources and pathways for the migration of contaminants. Additional research will be conducted collaboratively using the highest scientific standards and will be subjected to independent peer review.

We are committed to ensuring the peer review process is conducted with maximum transparency and the highest level of scientific integrity."

So, does this mean that the EPA testing mentioned in this article was not thoroughly peer reviewed?

It certainly sounds like it.

Another liberal, whiny article that has nothing at all to do with anything the vast majority here want to see.

It has been and will continue to be about money, not public safety.

Strange, the EPA testing was found lacking in many ways.

But it isn't only a problem in Wyoming. The exact same problems have been occurring in PA for years, and now with the increase of fracking in OH, we're starting to see it here too. The difference? Officials here are trying to say it's not from fracking. So then, what are we to believe? Explosive water is a natural occurrence?

A good analogy might be to say:

If the fracking keeps up then eventually we won't need to buy gas, just fill 'er up from your garden hose. Not sure how well your garden will do, though.

When people see a loss of money, they would okay killing soil, water & land to keep fracking going full tilt. Got to be a better way.
